Why Should I have My Crawlspace Inspected?

Do you remember prior to purchasing your home, you were required to have a home inspection? During the inspection an inspector went over your attic and/or crawl space with a fine-tooth comb. But if you have not had either of them inspected since that first time, you are long overdue. At Day Energy Solutions, we recommend inspecting both your attic and/or crawl space annually for the health and safety of your home.

Why Is It Important?

In a nutshell, an annual inspection is important because there are so many things that could go wrong up above or down below. Just because you do not see them does not mean they do not occur. In fact, exactly because you do not see what goes on in your attic and/or crawl space is why they need a regular examination.

Both locations in your home typically offer access to your plumbing, electrical, and ductwork, so if some type of problem cropped up, you may never be aware of it. Before long, the small issue evolves into a very costly repair. With an annual inspection, you can spot a problem to prevent it from growing larger year after year.

What Might We Find?

By nature of their locations, your attic and/or crawl space are X marks the spots for a plethora of potential complications. These locations are typically dark and isolated, making them both ideal habitats for mold growth and pests.

Mold could be living in either your attic or crawl space due to leaky pipes or lack of proper ventilation. The toxic health ramifications for mold in your home are highly detrimental.

Pests of all sorts could find their way to these dwellings. Here in the Salem/Corvallis area, our experts regularly encounter raccoons, rats, squirrels, mice, bats, opossums, and various arachnids/insects like spiders, cockroaches, bees, and wood destroying organisms (WDOs) such as termites, ants, and beetles.

Besides the physical damage rodents and WDOs can do to your home, especially your insulation and wood frame/foundation, there are health risks as a result of feces, urine, and other accompanying bacteria. These toxins can make their way into your home’s air supply, thereby forcing you to breathe them. The noxious complications from this scenario are unhealthful to say the least.

Besides the mold and pests, our experts also regularly discover structural damage or issues. These situations can deteriorate over time if they are not caught, causing you costly repairs. You may never know these exist until you are faced with their expensive results unless you schedule an annual inspection.

What to Do After the Inspection

Following an inspection, our expert will go over the details of his or her findings with you. If he or she uncovers anything untoward during the inspection, if it’s something he or she is not qualified to address, a member of our team can help you get in contact with the proper specialist.
